Working in downtown Salt Lake is an interesting thing and I meet lots of interesting people (interesting here can mean a good or a bad thing).
I have customers that like to keep to themselves, some who don't know what the heck their doing they just know they need new clothes and some that will talk your ear off, not only until your ears have fallen off but also until you are blue in the face. Then there are those who can hold a conversation without being annoying and seem pretty bright.
One such customer, a Todd and his brother, came in and posed an interesting question during one of our discussions. What kinds of things define you and where you will go in life?
I will walk you through our discussion.
This is Wendell Castle
This is a chair that Mr. Castle designed
Now the comment was made by Todd that "Wendell Castle looks like he would design something like that. Even his name fits the niche".
That comment gave me an epiphany. My brain said, "What if this is a nature vs. nature type of thing. Where Wendell Castle, for example, was given that name by his parents. He was raised by his parents who influenced him, in part, to become the person that he is today, in turn making his appearance and name match perfectly with his design style and career choice."
For example, if Wendell Castle had been born to parents that named him Joe Smith (a very common name) (no offense if your name is Joe Smith) he may have grown to wear contact lenses rather than bright blue thick rimmed glasses. He may also have chosen to be a doctor or an accountant or some other more ordinary job rather than a unique furniture designer.
Make sense? So other questions and previously viewed studies came into conversation. For example how Western culture has influence on people that they don't even realize. One thing mentioned is that people who have very westernized names like William, Owen, or even Todd etc for a man and Nancy, Liz (Elizabeth), Ashley etc for a women, have a better chance at a more successful life and career than someone who has a more eastern, or foreign sounding name- like Lemanjelo or LaFawnduh.
Another thing discussed was that people with larger vocabularies, who are raised by parents who are well spoken, put emphasis on education and literature as being important are more widely accepted and again, have a better chance at a more successful life (as in upper middle class where in the words of Bruce Dain, "you'll have a Beamer and a nice house with a boat parked out on the side"). Now this is not to say that without all of this you cannot become, Orangello the CEO of the next major fortune 500 company, but its easier to become Bruce Wayne when your name is Bruce Wayne.
